Tourism in Anklesvar

Anklesvar, located on the western part of Gujarat, is more popular as an industrial city. Nonetheless, with so many lakes located within its periphery and River Narmada flowing close by the city offers great scope for tourism.  In addition, if you are spiritually inclined, you have lots of temples scattered all over the city. We will start our tour with a visit to Ankleshwar Tirth

Ankleshwar Tirth

Ankleswar Tirth consists of four Digambar Jain Temples. Among these four, the Chintamoni Parsvanath Temple is considered the most auspicious; it houses one hundred and fifty meter tall idol of Lord Chintamoni Parsvanath. The idol is brown in color and is revered by people of all faith.

Besides the Chintamani Parsvanath temple, the other three temples within the Tirth are Neminath Mandir, Adinath Mandir and Mahavir Swami Mandir. Among these three, the Mahavir temple is the largest.

There is an interesting story about these temples. It is said that the idols of Parsvanath, Sheetalnath and Nandi were found in Raskunda area, which is around two kilometers from here. It was decided that they would be taken to Ankleshwar town, but midway the cart in which they were being taken stopped moving. In spite of repeated efforts, they could not be moved any further. Taking it as the will of God, they decided to install the deities there only. That is how, the temples came up where they stand today.

Other than the above mentioned, the town has many other temples dedicated to various deities. Some of them are located inside the city while some other are located just outside. Among them we can mention Chamunda Temple in Zadeshwar, Shiva Temple in Jambusar, Kuber Bhandari Shiva Temple in Karnali, Shree Ayappa Temple on Andada Road, Ganganath temple in Bhimpura, Angarshwar Temple on Sadhali Malsar Road etc.

GIDC Area in Ankleshwar

Lake at GIDC

However, if visiting temples is not your cup of tea there is nothing to be disappointed. There are plenty of places that offer secular enjoyment. The GIDC area inside Ankleshwar is one of them. It has many parks, reservoirs and other recreational centers. Do take time to visit the Millennium Park; it is the oldest park in the city. Besides there are quite a few joggers park, children’s park and swimming pools in this area. The Rotary Library is another landmark of this area.

Golden Bridge across Narmada

The Golden Bridge across River Narmada is another important place of tourist interest in Ankleshwar. It is called so not because it has anything to do with gold, but because of the high cost of the project. This nineteenth century bridge was built by then British administration for easier access in trade and communication.

Golden Bridge

The construction of the bridge started in 1877 and was completed in 1881. The bridge was inaugurated on 16th May of the same year. Although it took Rs. 45.65 lakh to build this bridge, every paise spent on it has been well utilized. Indeed, the bridge, which has been made out of rust proof steel, has witnessed many floods and earthquakes; yet, it has stood tall and continued to provide the only means for crossing River Narmada until Sardar Bridge was built a little away from the spot.

Construction of this new bridge has enabled diversion of traffic to some extent. Now only smaller vehicles are allowed to ply on this bridge.

River Narmada from Sardar Bridge

Sardar Bridge

The second bridge built on River Narmada is known as Sardar Bridge. Although this bridge is also quite old and a third bridge is being built to complement it, the view of river Narmada from this bridge is simply great. If you are in Ankleshwar do take time to visit it. Incidentally, both these bridges connect Ankleshwar and Bharuch.

One Day Visit to Bharuch

Temples in Bharuch

Bharuch, located just across River Narmada, also offer great prospect for tourism. If you are interested in historical edifices, you must visit Bharuch Fort built in 1791. Apart from religious sentiments, some of these temples have high archeological value. For more details on places of tourist interest in and around Bharuch you may click here.

Dahej, located on the gulf of Khambat, is another interesting place to visit. It is situated at the junction of Ban of Creek and Guljaria. There is a natural deep water port with fully mechanized berths located here. The port is capable of handling cape size vessels and can accommodate vessels of draft up to 25 meters. The view from the port is truly magnificent. The big ocean liners anchoring at the port make it all the more fascinating.  During high tide the water level rises up to 11 meters.
